Wegovy

Wegovy is approved for use in the NHS, alongside diet and physical activity, to manage excess weight and obesity in some people.

Wegovy comes as a pre-filled injector pen. You can use it to inject yourself weekly, under the skin in the upper arms, stomach, thighs or buttocks.

Wegovy acts on areas of the brain which are involved in regulating your appetite. It increases feelings of fullness, reduces feelings of hunger and reduces the preference for high-fat foods.

Mounjaro

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a weight loss treatment that comes in the form of a weekly self-injectable pen.

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is called tirzepatide.

Tirzepatide works on two different hormonal receptors:

GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which in turn talks to the brain to make you feel less hungry and prevent cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

GIP regulates energy balance in brain and fat cells, enhancing the GLP-1 effect of suppressing your appetite and improving sugar control.

By mimicking the effects of both these naturally occurring hormones, Mounjaro has been shown to have greater weight loss potential than medicines that work on GLP-1 alone.

Ozempic

Ozempic works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone. As those hormone levels rise, the molecules go to your brain, telling it you're full. It also slows digestion by increasing the time it takes for food to leave the body. This is similar to the effect of bariatric surgery.

The active ingredient in Ozempic, semaglutide, does work for weight loss, according to research. It's important that people continue to make lifestyle changes to help their weight loss, such as eating right and exercising.

It's opened up people's eyes to obesity as a disease now that there's effective medication for it. The vast majority of obese patients never got effective treatment because there wasn't effective treatment, or the treatment had more significant side effects. There was nothing that caused dramatic weight loss. You could get 5 to 10 percent of your weight loss on some of these other medications. Now we're looking at averages of 15 to 20 percent.
